Pilates vs. Lagree

This is one of my favorite topics to talk about and definitely a personal pet peeve. Ask any classically trained pilates instructor about this topic and I guarantee you will get an earful!

There have been so many “pilates” studios popping up everywhere in all major cities and many of them are in Miami and there is a reason I am putting the word pilates in quotes.

Traditional pilates - whether you are practicing the classic or contemporary approach - will be taught on equipment like the reformer and the Cadillac. This is equipment that was invented by Joseph Pilates back in the 1920s and continues to be used today. The structure of the equipment, the springs, the straps, the carriage and all of the equipment’s accessories have not changed since their inception.

As a studio owner, it was important to me to use the very best brand of American made equipment that could be found on the market - which is Balanced Body. Balanced Body combines the comfort of modern technology with a sleek and beautiful aesthetic, while maintaining the original design that Pilates had created.

Lagree, however, is a totally different workout invented by French bodybuilder Sebastian Lagree, using a piece of equipment called a megaformer. The entire premise of the workout was inspired by the ab wheel and has absolutely nothing to do with pilates in terms of exercise or origin. The way that instructors are certified to teach Lagree is also very different than pilates which as an important differentiation and one I suggest you to do your homework on.

Overall, if you are looking for an intense workout, you will be able to find it at an equipment based pilates studio such as Miami Pilates without compromising on quality of exercise or movement. We strive to incorporate props and spring loads on both the reformer and the Cadillac to achieve overall strength, balance, and a high level of fitness for your body and mind with every routine.
