What is a Pilates Cadillac?
We heard about reformers and seen them at most pilates studios we went to, but what the $@%! is a Cadillac? I thought it’s a car…
The pilates Cadillac looks like a bed frame in design, with four posts, a raised platform, and an overhead canopy-like component called a trapeze. It incorporates springs, handles and bars that elevate your workout in even more ways than a reformer can. These fun accessories make this apparatus a playground for your workout class and make you feel like a kid again exploring a jungle gym at your favorite park.
The Cadillac’s attachments can be adjusted based on each client’s strength, goals, and experience with pilates as a practice. One of the biggest differences between the Cadillac and the reformer is that the Cadillac platform remains stationary, while the reformer platform moves back and forth on metal rails below the platform. The Cadillac is bigger, which is a great option if you are tall and find the reformer uncomfortable to be on.
The Cadillac is also ideal for clients recovering from injuries or those with balance challenges or vertigo. It feels like you are laying on a mat, but you have more accessories and props to play with which help you build strength, balance and flexibility. You can sit, stand, lay and even hang on it.
Practicing pilates on a Cadillac is an ideal full body workout. The abs are engaged throughout all of the movements, whether you are targeting the upper or lower body. Core strength is vital to back support and overall health, and can reduce lower back pain. With pilates you may also notice increased blood flow and circulation, improving cardiovascular and lymphatic health.
